Scion Style : Wabi-Sabi

This look carefully incorporates a stunning Japanese aesthetic with Scion’s playful Scandi influences.

It’s all about appreciating beauty in the unexpected and paying homage to the importance of creating a calming space to love and treasure. Think dark walls, mix and match furniture and chunky embroideries, for a bold scheme that still feels calm and cosy.

Beauty In The Imperfect

The ancient Japanese art of wabi-sabi encourages us to accept the imperfect, whether it’s a slightly irregular shape, a well-worn pair of shoes or a lived-in piece of clothing. We’re respecting the simple things in life and creating a homely feel awash with fluid brush marks and bled ink.

In a world that’s obsessed with perfection, it feels good to step back and appreciate what we already have. Take an alternative perspective on asymmetry or inconsistency, instead of viewing each niggle in a positive light. Embrace the imperfect by mixing and matching all types of furniture and showcasing your treasured thrifted finds

We’re inspired by the traditional shibori dying method too, as featured in our Usuko fabric which adds a unique dimension to contemporary spaces, thanks to its distinctive shapes and tie-dye appearance. Choose your favourite wabi-sabi fabric to create the most beautiful made to measure curtains - the perfect way to finish a room.

Chunky Embroidery

Chunky embroidery is a great way to add texture and softness to a bold scheme. We chose to play with scale and print with this look. Centred around authenticity, wabi-sabi celebrates artisanal techniques and organic finishing touches, such as the beautifully handcrafted feel of Shinku’s colourful embroidered fabric.

For a slightly more structural approach, the chunky stitching and geometric design of our Aikyo fabric adds texture in an incredibly useable contemporary pattern. This design brings a Japanese flavour to made to measure blinds and made to measure curtains that work wonderfully when teamed with geometric wallpaper.

Bold Blues

We’ve chosen teal and blue coloured fabrics to build a grown-up feel combined with intense pops of cheerful colour. We love the traditional dying methods that feature on our Akira fabric, which enhances the beauty of imperfect inks, while showcasing a restful vibe that’s cool, calm and collected.

This saturated scheme stands beautiful against a dark blue coloured wall, a great way to create a backdrop for the bolder printed fabrics in this look. We would recommend using our chalky surface printed wallpapers such as Aikyo and Shinku to create a sophisticated look.

“The Akira design was inspired by an original archive kimono, we took the design and blew up the scale to give a playful Scion feel and accentuate the gorgeous brushed edge”
Charlotte, Scion Designer

As well as looking great, wabi-sabi can also help make us feel great. With its uncluttered appeal, this calming scheme looks after our minds with its incredible zen-like powers.
